The annual Black History observance serves as a mirror of the prevailing political atmosphere, so in what ways can we modernize it?

We are in Black History Month in the UK, and it seems it’s time for a rethink. Over the years, an observance that was initiated as a festivity and recollection of heritage, traditions and links between global Black communities, has taken on a commercial tone, growing to encompass gatherings where individuals of African heritage are compensated to talk to white audiences about “unconscious bias” and supportive partnership. The 2020s Black Lives Matter protests sparked an increase in the industry of demonstrating racial awareness. However, that period has concluded. The surge has reached its height, leaving a sort of hollowed out legacy of what promoting consciousness is for.

The Origins of Black History Month

First commemorated in the US and Canada, Black History Month was created in 1962 as a week dedicated to Negro history by Black scholar Carter G. Woodson with seven days of commemoration and observance in the middle of February. Black History Month evolved from this movement and was formally inaugurated in 1970. Now it is celebrated not only in the United States and Canada in the second month, but also in October in the Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands.

The month has developed since those days, placing less emphasis on the accounts of transatlantic enslavement and struggles for equality, and more on influential individuals of color in public life, creative fields, and advocacy, and widely honoring the impact Black people have made to influence the nation. It is in educational institutions where Black History Month is most regularly observed, with discussions and heritage festivities. But the way the month is celebrated is a reflection of the contemporary political context. How it progresses is a instructive case in how appropriation leads to weakening: the reshaping of Black History Month has impeded the purpose of it, which is to tackle embedded and established prejudice.

A Jarring Moment

Hardly anything shows how important it is to reevaluate Black History Month as much as the current time in which it takes place this year. In the UK, a revitalized conservative movement in the guise of the Reform political group is leading the polls. In the summer we observed the biggest extreme right demonstration in the UK's past. Kemi Badenoch, the Black leader of the Tory party, is a staunch adversary of the racial justice movement, and we are in a situation where a legislator feels emboldened to declare that the absence of Caucasian individuals in certain urban areas is a source of worry. Simultaneously, extreme conservative groups are expanding in the EU as a complete entity.

In the America, a significant offensive against DEI and affirmative action has been carried, often successfully, to the top legal institutions of the state. A campaign to erase Black history and narrative from the historical documents is in progress. One of Donald Trump's early administrative commands aimed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the renowned cultural organization, alleging that they of a “concerted and widespread effort to change the national past” by portraying America “as fundamentally prejudiced”.

In this context, the celebration illustrates how minimally it can be influential if it is confined to either obligatory business commemorations, or politically neutered festivities of historical achievements, rather than challenging the conditions of the present. It also demonstrates how its limited duration means that it is separated from the wider consistent effort that is required. An academic expert, a prof at a learning establishment, articulated it most accurately when she voiced worries about the fleeting superficial actions of the celebration. “The issue with embracing a superficial method”, she wrote, “is that it typically leads to that Black History Month turns into a fleeting performance rather than a catalyst for change.”

Reconsidering, Not Discarding

Establishing how to adapt, revise and extend initiatives for equal rights and acknowledgment in such moments of dejection and worry is a difficult task. There is a urge to just eliminate observances such as Black History Month entirely, thinking they are inadequate for current needs, or are relics of an period that has been ineffective.

Yet, in spite of all this, Black History Month, and in fact the entire extended network and legacy of campaigns for equality – community-based BLM initiatives, DEI programs, and yes, even those talks to businesses – form an infrastructure that a significant effort has been invested in. It is there not only to deteriorate as the politics moves on (and in fact, declines), but to be a dynamic entity.

So what would a new dynamic Black History Month appear as? Firstly, it would be not just one concentrated month: something that is dispersed throughout the annual calendar (as certain organizations are already beginning to do), sections of its curriculum (particularly around prominent figures of color) incorporated into academic syllabi. It would also be a era that does not evade politics, and provides room for individuals, particularly young people, to air their fears and experiences. What use is basic knowledge of the past when it ignores the present reality of far-right rallies in the street? Organizations who observe it should not be comforted with the neutral terminology of hidden discrimination and alertness to “microaggressions”, but challenged by the threats that face all if opposition to discrimination is not treated with importance. Briefly stated, Black History Month should be made current, pressing, and responsive. Maybe an total re-identification is in order – Black History is Now Month.
