French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.

The change in policy follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the President asking him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.

French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.

"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.

Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to disable the propellers of the vessels.

This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left office.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Now French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
